‘We Were Kept Away from the Last Rites’- Cremation of Dalit girl done by Police at 2:30 am, Without Family

The family of 19-year-old Dalit Girl, claims that the girl’s body was taken away by the police in the middle of the night for cremation the final rites.

“The police have forcibly taken the dead body, and my father along with them for cremation. When my father reached Hathras, he was immediately taken (to the crematorium) by the police,” her brother said.

The girl who was gangraped by four men on September 14 in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras and was receiving treatment at Delhi hospital was cremated in the middle of the night, the family of the victim has alleged. She was referred to Delhi’s Safdarjung hospital where she breathed her last on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the police said the cremation was being carried out “as per the wishes of the family”.

An official said, “Other Administration officials and Senior police were also present at the crematorium in the middle of the night”.

But the relative of the girl said that her father was accompanied by 30 to 40 people, chiefly relatives, and others from their neighbourhood had gone to the crematorium near Bool Garhi village, under Chandpa police station limits, in the district in western UP.

Protests broke out in Delhi and Hathras, as the news of her death spread, with all sections of society, including politicians, sports and cine stars and activists, expressing their anguish and demanding justice for her.

The CM of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath has also asked for the trial to be conducted in a fast-track court.

The special investigation team will be headed by Home Secretary Bhagwan Swaroop and Deputy Inspector General of Police Chandraprakash and IPS officer Poonam.

“CM Yogi Adityanath has ordered the formation of a three-member SIT to investigate the Hathras incident. It will be headed by state home secretary Bhagwan Swarup, and will have inspector general Chandraprakash and PAC Sena Nayak Poonam as members. The team has to submit a report within seven days.”

The announcement was made by the chief minister’s office (CMO) on Twitter.
