What is Happening to Me is Not Something Unique, Happening to Me Alone. It is the Broader Process that is Taking Place all Over the Country : Stan Swamy, Before Arrest Last Year

Before he was arrested on 8 October, last year, Stan Swamy had said in a video, “What is happening to me is not something unique, happening to me alone. It is the broader process that is taking place all over the country.”

He expressed that all those who showed dissent against the rule were put in jail. “We are all aware of, how prominent intellectuals, lawyers, writers, poets, activists, students leaders, they are all put into jail because they have expressed their dissent, raised questions about the ruling powers of India,” he said.

He said that he was happy that he was a part of the process. “So we are part of the process. In a way, I am happy to be part of process because I am not a silent spectator.

But I am part of it, part of the game and ready to pay the price, whatever be it,” said Swamy.

Swamy was a Jesuit priest, who fought relentlessly for the tribals and the Dalits. He had expressed to a judge in a court hearing that he wanted to be among his own, in Ranchi.

His death is being mourned by various civil society activists, who are also demanding that all the political prisoners be freed.

The Jesuit Provincial of India released a Press Statement after Swamy’s passing away, acknowledging his selfless activism for the Adivasis, Dalits and other Martian communities.

“With a deep sense of pain, anguish and hope we have surrendered Fr. Stan Swamy, aged 84, to his eternal abode on July 5, 2021 the author of life and who gave him a mission to work among the Adivasis, Dalits and other marginalized communities so that the poor may have life and life to the full, with dignity and honour,” the statement read.

Paying their condolences to Swamy’s family, friends, lawyers and well-wishers said, “On behalf of the Jesuits of India, especially the Jesuits of Jamshedpur Jesuit Province, I express my deepest condolences to the family members, friends, lawyers, well-wishers and all those who stood by Stan and prayed for him during this moment of trial and suffering.”

In the statement, they have committed to take forward Swamy’s mission of Justice and Reconciliation forwarsa. “The Society of Jesus, at this moment, recommits itself to take forward the legacy of Fr. Stan in its mission of Justice and Reconciliation,” read the statement.
