‘Will continue till bodies are returned’- Families continue sit-in protest in Srinagar despite extreme cold

In wake of the recent civilian killings at Hyderpora area of Central Kashmir’s Srinagar on Monday evening, the family members of Mohammad Altaf and Dr. Mudasir Gul have continued their protest despite extremely cold conditions at Press Enclave, Srinagar.

The activists of the Jammu and Kashmir Youth National Conference (JKYNC) along with its president, Salman Sagar, also joined the sit-in candlelight protest, demanding justice for the victims and the return of the dead bodies to their family members. Peerzada Mohammad Shafi, and other activists joined in, too. The participants in the candlelight protest held placards which read “Justice for Dr. Mudassar and Mohd. Altaf” “We Want Justice”.

On Monday, the police had claimed that an “encounter” had erupted between the government forces and the militants in Hyderpora area of Srinagar, in which 4 people were killed. Following which, the family members of three deceased civilians refuted the police allegations that they were ‘militant associates’ or ‘OGW’s’.

It is also pertinent to mention here that the Jammu and Kashmir Police following the encounter had claimed that all 4 dead bodies were buried in the Handwara area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

During the protest, Salman Sagar held a placard reading, “Stop Innocent Killings and Atrocities” and some other activists held other placards which read “Justice for Returning Bodies”.

Talking to the reporters, at the press enclave, JKYNC President Salman Sagar said, “There is no politics in this issue. This is related to the civilian killings. The police has also claimed that the two deceased were civilians. As far as the killings of civilians are concerned, the dead bodies of the 2 deceased civilians should be handed over to the family immediately.”

“If the administration fails to listen to the plea of little kids, it would be most uncharitable and shameless act. The videos of these little kids are gut-wrenching and poignant,” he added.

Appealing to the authorities, to return the bodies of the deceased to their families, Sagar said, “We appeal the LG, Manoj Sinha that bodies of these deceased civilians be handed over to the families immediately.

Earlier, our party president Dr. Farooq Abdullah had also talked to the governor about this issue and he was assured that justice will be served. The dead ones cannot come back but the family should at least be given the right to perform the last rites of their beloved.”

Peerzada Mohammad Shafi, a JKINC member, who also participated in the sit-in candlelight protest appealed the people to speak up against the innocent killings and demand justice for the victims. “If we don’t speak today, it may happen to us tomorrow,” Peerzada Mohammad Shafi said to the participants during the sit-in protest.

Peerzada Mohammad Shafi raised the slogans for justice during the protest and also demanded that the bodies of the deceased civilians should be returned to the family.

Speaking to The Kashmiriyat the family members said, “We will continue our protests, no matter how dark and cold it gets. We will protest till we get their dead bodies back.”

It is pertinent to mention that another slain – Muhammad Amir’s family had refuted police’s claims, too. The claims were also refuted by Mudasir and Altaf’s families, who said Amir was an errand boy. Amir’s family had said that if the administration does return the body of their slain son, they’ll take to the road in Ramban.

Thus, the administration imposed restrictions under section 144 at certain areas of Ramban today. Under section 144, a gathering of 4 or more than 4 is prohibited.
