More than a week after being burnt by her in-laws in the Anantnag district of South Kashmir, the woman admitted in the SMHS hospital of Srinagar has lost the battle against life and succumbed to her burn injuries on Thursday evening.

Speaking to The Kashmiriyat her brother Nazir Ahmed confirming the news said, “she started breathing heavily at around 8:30 PM in SMHS hospital, the doctors came to check her condition and declared her dead.”

She had sustained 95 percent burn injuries after she was allegedly set ablaze by her inlaws. She was undergoing treatment at the SMHS for the past seven days and at around 8:45 she lost the battle with life and passed away.

Last Thursday, a 28-year-old woman Shahzada Bano was allegedly set ablaze by her in-laws in Mattan following which she was rushed to a nearby hospital who referred her SMHS hospital in Srinagar for specialized treatment.

The Kashmiriyat visited the survivor’s residence at Aishmuqam in district Anantnag and spoke to her father Ghulam Qadir Bhat who told The Kashmiriyat that his daughter Shahzada Bano who has been married for 13 years was living with them for the last 9 months and had recently a month back gone to live at her inlaws house.

“We got a call yesterday that she was being transferred to SMHS as she had been in a fire accident. My son and some people went to the hospital where the doctors told them that her survival chances are dismal and that whoever wants to have some last words with her should be called. I spoke to her on the phone she could barely talk and asked for forgiveness. “ Ghulam Qadir said.

“I want the culprit of this heinous crime to be punished as soon as possible. So that it works as a deterrent for others and no other daughter has to suffer my Shahzad’s fate.” He said.

As soon as the news of this incident spread in the area people came out to protest and alleged that Shahzad’s husband was trying to marry another woman due to which he took this inhuman step and he must be dealt with as per law. They also requested District Magistrate Anantnag and police to act swiftly and take culprits to the task.

A police officer said that a case under FIR number 15/2021 has been registered at Police Station and investigation has been taken up, adding that the culprits will be dealt with strictly and will ensure justice to the victim.
