A wooden bridge in the Machkani Wangath area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district was partially damaged after being set ablaze by unidentified individuals during the night hours, residents told The Kashmiriyat on Friday.
The bridge, which connects Gagadbal to surrounding areas, is crucial for hundreds of villagers who use it daily to reach schools, markets, and medical facilities.
Its destruction has thrown normal life into disarray, leaving residents cut off and distressed.
“This bridge is the only way for our children to get to school and for us to access health care and daily necessities,” said Ghulam Rasool, a local resident. “We have no alternative route, and now we are forced to take dangerous paths through the forest.”
Residents said they woke up to smoke and flames coming from the bridge late at night. Although the fire was contained before it could destroy the entire structure, the bridge has been rendered unsafe for use.
“We don’t understand who would want to harm us like this,” said Naseema Bano, a woman from the area. “The government must take this seriously. We are suffering.”
The locals have appealed to the administration for immediate repair of the bridge and a proper investigation into the incident. They also demanded enhanced security in the area to prevent such acts in the future.
An official from the local administration told The Kashmiriyat that the matter is being looked into and that a team will visit the spot to assess the damage.
