
A labourer while extracting sand from the river Jehlum drowned during the pre-dawn hours on Thursday in Srinagar, an official from the River Police said.
The incident occurred near Armpora Sonwar footbridge.
The official told news agency Kashmir News Trust that some labourers were extracting the sand during which a labourer from Banihal Ramban lost balance in the boat and slipped into the river.
“An operation that was started shortly after the incident to locate the labourer is underway. He is feared dead,” the official said and identified the victim as 23-year-old Jaafar Ahmed Wani son of Abdul Rashid Wani, a resident of Banihal area of Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir. (KNT)
