‘Altercation over Kerala story’: Muslim students attacked by goons at Jammu medical college

A final year student from chenab valley was assaulted by goons at the Government Medical College of Jammu on Sunday night.

Speaking to The Kashmiriyat, a student alleged that this was not the first incident of confrontation at the medical College. Earlier on several occasions, Kashmiri students have been thrashed.

He said that the argument begun when some Hindu students posted messages against Muslim community on WhatsApp groups after watching the film Kerala story, to which the Muslim students objected.

The Hindu student had also written that everyone must watch the movie, to which a Kashmiri student from Qazigund studying in first year argued that it was an educational group and such messages shall not be shared in public groups.

“In reaction they (hindus) with the help of seniors planned to assault the objecting students. As they were on the way, they were intercepted by seniors (Muslims), however, the group attacked the seniors too and assaulted one of the student,” he said.

The Hindu students attacked the muslim student identified as Haseeb Ahmed from Bhaderwah in Chenab valley with a hard object (probably iron rod), during which the final year student from Doda suffered grievous injuries on his head. “The student was shifted to emergency, however, later some goons (Outsiders) entered the hostel premises switched off the lights and assaulted the muslim students there,” he told The Kashmiriyat.

The Hindu students, however, claim that the Muslim students attacked them initially.

The incident triggered nocturnal protests as the Muslim students joined by several Hindu and sikh students sat on the roads to protest the incident.

Appealing the Police and university management to intervene, the students said that such incidents have happened in the past too. “Earlier a Kashmiri student from Kulgam was assaulted by the goons for no reason. We want this matter resolved for ever,” he said.

To demand action against the culprits, the students will hold protest inside the campus premises today. (Monday)

As per the students, the injured student has sustained head injuries with 12 stitches.

SSP Jammu, Chandan Kohli was quoted by local news agency the Kashmir Scroll as saying that there has been “an incident of scuffle” between some students and outsiders in GMC Hostel, Jammu.

“The police have taken cognizance of the matter and investigation is going on,” he told the news agency.
