Kashmiri journalist Asif Sultan re-arrested in old case: Report

Kashmiri journalist Asif Sultan has been rearrested in connection with a case dating back to 2018 filed at a Police station in Srinagar.

According to his family and legal sources, quoted by The Wire, Asif Sultan, who had been under preventive detention since 2022 under the Public Safety Act (PSA) in Uttar Pradesh, was brought back to his home in Batamaloo, Srinagar, only to be arrested again.

His detention under the PSA was quashed by the Jammu Kashmir High Court in December last year, terming it “illegal” and the allegations against him as “unsustainable.”

However, his prolonged his reunion with the family had to wait for over two months due to “clearance” issues from Jammu Kashmir’s Home Department.

The report added that, after he returned to Srinagar, Asif was summoned to the Rainawari police station and subsequently arrested in connection with an Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) case.

Although a court in Srinagar granted him bail on April 5, 2022, authorities invoked the PSA against him, alleging involvement in militant activities.

The PSA dossier accused Asif, an award-winning Kashmiri journalist, of being an “over-ground worker of militants.
