12 dead, hundreds injured as earthquake jolts Afghanistan, tremors felt in Kashmir

At least twelve people were killed and hundreds others injured in a massive earthquake that was felt across Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kashmir and several parts of north India.

As per news reports, the 6.5-magnitude quake damaged buildings, triggered landslides and sent people running into the streets.

It hit Tuesday evening local time and was centred in Afghanistan’s Jurm valley which is prone to quakes.

The tremors were felt across Kashmir valley as people were seen rushing out of their homes towards open spaces.

Jolts were felt for a long time around 10 17 PM on Tuesday, local residents said.”It was a terrifying tremor. I have not felt such a tremor  in my life,” a resident said.

As per AFP, nine of the confirmed fatalities were reported in the valley region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Pakistan.

Three others were killed in Afghanistan, the country’s health ministry spokesman said. A child was among those fatalities in the Laghman province near the country’s border with Pakistan, AFP reported.
