13 arrested for raising ‘anti-national’ slogans inside Jamia Masjid Srinagar; Likely to be booked under PSA

The Jammu Kashmir Police has arrested thirteen youth from various parts of Srinagar in case related to sloganeering inside Jamia Masjid Srinagar on Friday.

The Jammu Kashmir police, on Friday, conducted nocturnal raids in Srinagar’s downtown and arrested two youth from the Hawal area in connection to the ‘pro-freedom sloganeering’ at Jamia Masjid, Srinagar.

An official told The Kashmiriyat that Police conducted raids at several locations during which two main accused of the sloganeering were arrested. “The duo was identified as Basharat Nabi Bhat Son of Ghulam Nabi Bhat, a resident of Hawal, Nowhatta and Umar Manzoor Sheikh Son of Late Manzoor Ahmed Sheikh, a resident of Bahuddin Saab, Nowhatta,” the official said.

After the conclusion of Friday prayers at Srinagar’s Jamia Masjid which remained shut for two consecutive Ramdans, pro-freedom slogans were raised inside the mosque.

The Jammu Kashmir administration did not allow prayers in Jamia Masjid Srinagar for 27 consecutive Fridays. Jamia Masjid has mostly been shut post the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019.

According to the official, the Jamia Masjid committee tried to stop these youth from raising slogans which led to clashes between the youth and Jamia masjid committee. The Police immediately filed an FIR under the number 16/2022 under sections 124A (sedition), 120 B (criminal conspiracy) and 447 (Punishment for criminal trespass) of IPC at the Nowhatta PS.

He said the initial two arrest lead to the arrests of eleven more persons “involved” in the sloganeering at Jamia Masjid.

“We are questioning more people and more arrests can be expected if their role is formally established.”

The official said that the Police is planning to book the arrested youth under the draconian Public Safety Act. “Their dossiers are being prepared,” the official stated.

“During initial investigation it is come to the fore that the main accused had received instructions from Pakistani handlers of militant outfits to disrupt Friday prayers in Jamia masjid and provoke the devotees to create law and order situation,” the official said.

Jamia Masjid Srinagar has been one of the major centres of protests in the aftermath of the 2010 Civilian uprising. Stone throwing clashes would follow every Friday after the congregational prayers.
