14 Months After Detention, Six Muslim Youth from UP Cleared of NSA Charges

Fourteen months after their detention under the National Security Act, Allahabad High Court has cleared six Muslims from the Mau district of Uttar Pradesh from all the charges and called their detention illegal.

Muslim youths were taken into custody in connection with the protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act in Mau. The Six were accused of being involved in violence caused by the protests, according to Muslim Mirror.

Allahabad High court observed that the detainees had to be informed about the grounds of detention and given the opportunity to make representation – mandatory under Article 22 (5) of the NSA. “This has not been adhered to by the state government in Uttar Pradesh,” the High court observed.

Identified as Amir Shabbir, Shahryar, Abdul Wahab, Asif Chandan, Anas, and Faizan, the six were detained in September 2020.
