2020- 625 ‘Militant Associates’ Arrested, 165 New Youth Joined Militancy in Kashmir

The Government Forces have detained around 625 alleged Over Ground Workers of militants during the year 2020.

Since 2016, the government forces launched a massive crackdown against OGWs also called as Militant associates to limit the capabilities of Militants to attack and regroup.

The OGWs facilitate the movement of public in a particular area, manage logistical support and sometimes are part of the reconnaissance missions as well.

Most of the alleged OGWs arrested this year were booked under Arms Act, or the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, ET Reported.

Around 12 militants were captured or convinced to surrender at the encounter sites this year.

Since 2016, the massive crackdown against OGWs has led to the elimination of top Militant commanders and the forces have been able to get access to the inside networks of the Militant outfits.

Official figures reveal that at least 220 militants are still active in Kashmir, which includes around 70 to 80 foreign militants.

“625 Over Ground Workers were detained this year till now. A total of 206 Militants were killed this year and 57 arrested. Around 46 of the arrested had joined this year. So, far only two civilians were killed at the encounter sites,” said Vijay Kumar, Inspector General of police in Kashmir.

Around 12 militants were captured or convinced to surrender at the encounter sites during this year. Kumar also informed that around 36 youngsters, who were allegedly planning to join the militant ranks, were brought back with proactive support of their families.

On the other hand, over 165 locals have joined the militant ranks this year.
