Rainfall to continue in plains, Upper reaches of Kashmir receive more snow

Higher reaches including Gulmarg recorded fresh snowfall while the plains of Jammu Kashmir received rains on Saturday. A meteorological department official told Srinagar based news gathering agency Kashmir Scroll the fresh snowfall in the higher reaches resulting in appreciable drop in the mercury. He said snowfall was reported from Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Pahalgam, Gurez besides higher reaches of Kupwara, Handwara areas of valley. The rest of the valley, including Srinagar city, has been lashed by moderate to heavy rains since Friday afternoon. Jammu Kashmir Disaster Management Authority (JKDMA) on Friday issued an avalanche warning in the higher reaches of nine districts during the next 24 hours, officials said. An avalanche with “medium danger” level is likely to occur above 2200 metres over Bandipora, Baramulla and Kupwara districts of North Kashmir and in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district in the next 24 hours. Kashmiri journalist Asif Sultan has been rearrested in connection with a case dating back to 2018 filed at a Police station in Srinagar.
