In a historic shift for Jammu Kashmir, five nominated Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) are poised to play a critical role in government formation, marking the first time such members will be directly involved in shaping the region's political future. These five nominated MLAs, representing Kashmiri displaced persons and those from Pakistan-administered Kashmir (PoK), will enjoy the same legislative powers and privileges as their elected counterparts. The nominees will include two Kashmiri displaced members—one woman and one man—alongside a representative for the PoK displaced community. The administration says that the move is a "major milestone", fulfilling a long-standing demand for the representation of these marginalized groups. With their inclusion, the Jammu Kas...

Congress slams BJP’s bid to nominate MLAs before government formation in Jammu Kashmir

REGIONAL
The Congress party has criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) attempt to nominate five leaders to the Jammu Kashmir Legislative Assembly through the Lieutenant Governor before a new government is formed. The Jammu Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) argued that the power to nominate these members should be left to the newly established government, Kashmir News Observer reported. Ravinder Sharma, JKPCC Senior Vice President and Chief Spokesperson, stated that bypassing this process would undermine democratic principles and the will of the people. The Congress party acknowledged the idea of reserving seats in the Assembly for refugees from Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), Kashmiri Pandits, and other minorities. However, it warned against misusing these nomin...

More than 68,000 Israelis evacuate cities amid ongoing Hezbollah strikes

Nearly a year after Hezbollah began launching missiles into northern Israel, more than 68,000 Israelis remain displaced, unsure of when—or if—they will be able to return home. The conflict, which escalated after Hamas attacked Israel in October 2023, has opened a new front with Hezbollah, leading to relentless missile strikes on civilian communities near the Lebanon border. Among the hardest-hit areas is Kiryat Shemona, where residents have been evacuated repeatedly due to the ongoing threat from Hezbollah. The situation has left many wondering whether their hometowns will ever return to normal. A poll conducted in June revealed that 43% of Kiryat Shemona’s 30,000 residents are considering not going back, with 13% already deciding to permanently leave the area. Many residents d...
