Authorities in Anantnag have registered 25 FIRs against food vendors for selling unhygienic food items in the town.

The action was taken during a series of joint raids conducted by the Anantnag Police on the directions of SSP Anantnag, as part of a wider drive to ensure public health and food safety in the district.

According to an official who spoke to The Kashmiriyat, the FIRs were registered over the months of September and October against mutton sellers and roadside snack vendors in the south Kashmir town.

The majority of the cases revolve around keeping food items in the open, exposing them to dust, pollution, and other unhygienic conditions that could pose serious health risks to consumers.

Police in Anantnag has reiterated his commitment to the safety and well-being of the residents of the south Kashmir district, emphasizing that such drives will continue to ensure strict compliance with food safety norms.

Officials from the Food Safety Department also stated that the joint operation aims to curb the sale of substandard and unhygienic food across local markets.

Locals have largely welcomed the move. “This was much needed. For years, we’ve seen food items kept uncovered in the markets,” said Abdul Rashid, a resident of Qazi Mohalla, adding that such checks will help improve hygiene and protect public health.

The crackdown follows recent seizures of unhygienic mutton from several parts of Kashmir, highlighting growing concerns over food quality and storage standards in local markets.
