In Assam prisons, 61% of convicts and 49% of undertrials were Muslims, while the community’s share of the state’s population was 34%, Prison statistics of India revealed.
There were 161 incidents of police action in Assam, since Sarma assumed office, in which 51 people were killed and 139 others injured. At least 22 out of them were Muslims.
According to the data compiled by Prison Statistics of India, In 2021, 30% of all prisoners in Indian jails were Muslim. As of 2011, the Muslim population in the country’s stands at only 14.2 percent.
