The United Nations confirmed on Tuesday that at least 70 people have been killed and dozens have been injured in South Sudan during the clash between the army and armed civilians.
The violent clash took place in the north-central Warrap state of South Sudan this weekend.
UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said that “the violence was sparked by a disagreement over a disarmament exercise being conducted in the area”.
The disarmament exercises are a part of the recent peace agreement between South Sudanese President Salva Kiir and rival Riek Machar, who was appointed vice president in February 2020.
As per the reports, the most recent violence was incited when civilians denied handing over their guns to the soldiers at a market in Tonj East County in Warrap State.
The clash soon spread across nearby areas including some villages and armed civilians attacked an army base in Romich on Monday.
