Accused thief with BJP links paraded semi-naked by locals in Jammu, party distances itself

A leader of the Bhartiya Janata Party was caught by locals while trying to snatch the jewelry of a woman in Jammu’s Parade ground.

Locals told The Kashmiriyat that on Friday morning, the accused, a resident of Reasi in Jammu Kashmir, was caught by the locals when he tried to snatch the earrings of a woman in the busy Parade market of Jammu city.

“It was morning time on Friday, when the accused was roaming in the market, upon seeing a lone woman, he rushed towards her and attacked her, but the local shopkeepers had been noticing his movements for a while. As soon as he attacked the woman, the local shopkeepers rushed to the spot and caught the thief,” said a local.

He said that after being caught, the accused tried to escape, stating that he had “good connections” everywhere, which angered the locals. “The angered local shopkeepers caught hold of him and wrote thief on his face,” he added.

A video of the incident has gone viral on social media in which locals can be seen parading him semi-naked through the market. His head has been half-shaven by the angry shopkeepers who demanded stringent punishment against the accused.

The accused is a member of the BJP Yova Morcha, as per locals. The BJP had denied any links with the accused, however, his photos have gone viral on social media, showing him attending political events of the party.

The Kashmiriyat accessed the Facebook profile of the accused, which shows his photos with prominent BJP leaders. “I Support ABVP,” reads one caption on his Facebook profile. One of his photos shows him holding a sword near his bike with a Saffron flag on the vehicle. A leader of the Bhartiya Janta party denied that the accused was a member of the Bhartiya Janta Party.

In the post from the year 2017 and 18, the accused was an active member of ABVP and can be seen protesting in various events organized by the student wing of the BJP.

The Police has initiated an investigation into the theft incident.
