Admin launches verification drive for media persons in Kulgam

The Department of Information, Government of Jammu Kashmir, has issued a circular directing all media persons operating in the Kulgam district to submit their credentials for verification within seven days.

The directive, issued by the District Information Officer, Kulgam, follows the instructions of the Joint Director Information, Kashmir (vide No. INF/K-Estt.2091-98/2025 dated October 31, 2025) and is aimed at preventing the misuse of media identity and impersonation in the district.

According to the circular, journalists are required to furnish details and documents listed in Annexure “A”, including Aadhaar or PAN card, office ID card, appointment letter from the media organization, contact details, salary or bank statements for the past six months, and links to their digital or social media platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, X (Twitter), and Instagram.

“This move aims to protect the sanctity of journalism, curb the growing menace of fake journalists, and create a transparent system for bona fide media professionals to operate in the district,” the circular states.

The order further notes that only those journalists whose credentials are verified and authenticated by the District Information Office will be allowed to cover official government functions, press conferences, and visits of VIPs or VVIPs within Kulgam district.

Unauthorized or unverified individuals, it adds, “will not be entertained under any circumstances.”

Copies of the order have been forwarded to the District Magistrate Kulgam, Director Information & PR, J&K, Senior Superintendent of Police Kulgam, and the Joint Director Information & PR, Kashmir for necessary information and action.

Earlier, several districts in Kashmir including Shopian, Baramulla and Kupwara have issued similar orders.
