The administration has lifted ban on stone quarries in Pantha Chowk and Athwajan, for the lifting of loose material for administrative work. The first vehicle carrying material was flagged off today.

The ban has been lifted for two unions, Himalayan Quarry and Tipper Associations in Pantha Chowk, Srinagar and United Quarry and Tipper Association in Athwajan, Srinagar.

The stone quarries in Pantha Chowk, Athwajan were banned on November 11, 2016 by the Government under order 202/IND. But as part of the rehabilitation plan, the quarry holders were promised another quarry at Airpora in the Zewan area of Srinagar.

The ban not only halted the constructions but many families who were dependent on these quarries were severely affected.

Talking to The Kashmiriyat, Mohammad Maqbool Parra, President Himalayan Quarry and Tipper association said, “The ban was imposed in 2016, after that some relaxation was given in 2017, 2018 and 2019 and now they have ordered relaxation in 2021.”

“They have only given permit of disposal of loose material only for Government work purpose for now,” he said while talking to The Kashmiriyat.
