The administration of the UT Jammu Kashmir on Saturday began a drive to collect the biometric details of Rohingyas staying in Jammu. A PTI report quoted an official of the administration.
The Rohingyas are a Muslim minority in Myanmar who fled their country to save their lives owing to mass persecution. They entered India through Bangladesh and took shelter in different parts of India.
The verification process of Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar was carried out at the MAM Stadium where their biometric and other details were collected. The biometric data was collected after conducting COVID-19 tests.
The Indian government has been under a lot of pressure from some political factions as well as social organizations urging the government to expedite the deportation of Rohingyas.
Between 2008 and 2016, according to government data, the population of Rohingya Muslims and Bangladeshis immigrants has increased by over 6000. Many see it as a conspiracy to alter the demographic nature of Jammu and Sambha.
