After constant showers, Farmers joyous as farming activities begin in Kashmir

Amid prediction for mainly dry weather and warmer days, joy has returned to the valley where the farmer community in particular had been hit by constant rainfall.

Pertinently, heavy showers and hailstorm at several places deferred the yearly transplantation of paddy in the fields across the Kashmir valley. Paddy is the chief crop of the region.

Prayers were held across the Kashmir valley by the farmers and the business community during the past week. In a traditional religious practice, farmers thronged the Khanqahs in nooks and corners of the valley and made Tehri (rice dish) which was distributed among the needy and others.

Special prayers were made at major Khanqahs including Dastgeer sahib and Naqshband sahib in Srinagar, Kabamarg, Khiram and Reshmoul sahab in Anantnag, Khanqah and Tujjer Shareef in Baramulla among other places.

From June 6-12, an official said, mainly dry weather is expected. “There would be a gradual increase in temperature. Warmer days are ahead,” officials from the Meteorological Department said.
