‘After his Death, His Eyes were Donated to the Blind’- A Memoir of Comrade Krishan Dev Sethi

Krishan Dev Sethi, 93, the last surviving member of the Jammu & Kashmir Constituent Assembly. Who passed away on 28 January 2021 at his Jammu residence had pledged to donate his eyes after his death.

The Family sources informed that as per his last wish and promise “Within hours of his death on January 28, his corneas were removed and successfully transplanted to two persons suffering from corneal blindness,” they said adding that the corneal transplant took place a day after his death.

Born in Mirpur, now in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir, Mr. Sethi was an elected member of the first Constituent Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir formulated in 1951 and finalized the separate constitution of Jammu Kashmir. He represented the Nowshera Assembly segment.

He was the General secretary of Democratic Conference Jammu Kashmir and was the last member of JK’s constituent assembly. Besides this, Sethi was also part of the land reforms act.

Krishan Dev Sethi was not only a well-known leader in Jammu, where he resided but also very popular across the LOC in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. He was an ardent supporter of an independent Kashmir and fought for independence since the 1950s. He has served in jail for two years back in 1945 during the Quit Kashmir movement.
