A recent notification issued by the Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) Directorate General of Health Services Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Government of India asserts that Jammu Kashmir is likely to participate in All India Quota for admission to PG courses (MD/MS/Diploma/PG DNB) under NEET PG 2021.
In this regard, the MBBS students of the Government Medical College, Anantnag staged a protest and demanded a withdrawal of this order which pertains to the Medical PG seats in the erstwhile state of Jammu Kashmir.
The protesting students held placards with “Save Our Future,” “Justice for Doctor Patient Ratio,” etc., written over them. The students raised various slogans, which included “We Want Justice” and “Rollback PG Seats.”
One of the protesting students, a second-year MBBS student at GMC, Anantnag, expressing anguish told The Kashmiriyat, “Recently, a notification was issued by the Jammu Kashmir administration, which said that 50% of the PG seats will be available for All India Quota.”
“The situation of MBBS students in Kashmir is already pitiable. There are times when the internet is cut off for days. We are deprived of basic facilities and instead of solving our problems, the administration is letting us down,” the student added.
The agitated student added that the undergraduate seats had been increased from 500 to 1100. While the Post Graduate seats were decreasing whereas, they were supposed to increase.
“When there are numerous medical graduates from outside Kashmir and 1100 graduates from within Kashmir, where will we go? Students think that there’s no use of pursuing MBBS, now,” stressed the student.
“We, the students of Jammu Kashmir including the dropouts, internees, and MBBS students, request the Government of India and the L.G. Jammu Kashmir, Mr. Manoj Sinha to save our future and save the saviours, i.e., Doctors,” the student concluded.

Another student, here, at the Government Medical College, Anantnag said, “This protest is not taking place at our college, alone. In fact, protests are going on throughout Jammu Kashmir.”
“These protests are taking place because the administration has come up with a notification which states that the 50% of our seats would decline in the PG quota,” he added.
Further, this student said that there were 472 seats among which 124 seats belonged to Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Science (SKIMS), Srinagar. “SKIMS occupied a huge quota, already. And now, 50% of the seats would be allotted to people outside Jammu Kashmir under the All India Quota,” he expressed his concern to The Kashmiriyat.
“We, the students of Kashmir, have always been deprived of facilities as basic as the internet. Since many months, we’ve had to attend classes via online mode,” he said in a distressed tone.
“If students from other states come here, language will be a huge barrier. So, we request the administration to reserve seats for only the students of Jammu Kashmir,” he added.
Speaking to The Kashmiriyat, another medical student of GMC Anantnag Faisal Ahmed said, “Initially, NEET PG seats were reserved for the students of Jammu Kashmir, alone. Now, the administration has reserved 50% of the seats for non-residents of Jammu Kashmir.”
“The administration came up with this decision 2 days ago. Meanwhile, the agitation against this unjust decision has started all across Jammu Kashmir,” a student apprehensive about the notification said to The Kashmiriyat.
