Amid massive crackdown, Parliamentarian Simranjit Mann’s Twitter account withheld in India

Amid the massive crackdown to arrest Amritpal Singh, the Twitter account of Simranjit Singh Mann has been withheld in India.

Earlier in the day, Simranjit Singh Mann who is also the member parliament from Punjab’s Sangrur constituency had issued a video stating that there were apprehensions that Amritpal had been arrested and he may be killed in a staged encounter.

The Punjab Police, as per local news reports, has arrested 112 people so far, which includes 27 supporters of Amirtpal Singh who were trying to stage a protest in Ludhiana demanding his release.

During the massive crackdown more than hundred persons have been detained so far which includes a research scholar, Makhan Singh. More than 21 supporters of Amritpal Singh have been arrested while trying to stage protest in Ludhiana.

Earlier the Punjab Police said that it had seized the vehicles used by Amritpal and recovered a 315 bore rifle along with 57 live cartridges from the car.

The detained include the members of Shirimoni Akali Dal (Amritsar) and an actor. Meanwhile the Twitter account of member parliament from Sangrur Punjab in India. Earlier in the day the parliamentarian had said that there were apprehensions that Amritpal may be killed in Police custody.

Meanwhile, protests have erupted in various parts of Punjab amid strict restrictions imposed in the state. The Police held several flag marches on Sunday as internet and SMS services continued to be barred for the second consecutive day. Authorities also announced an imposition of section 144 (which disallows assemblies) in Chandigarh district of the state.

“The internet ban has hit our education and business severely. In an online age, students highly use internet to study. This ban has terribly impacted our preparation for upcoming exams. This looks like an emergency situation. People are terrified and nobody has a clue as to what is happening,” Sandeep, a student of Panjab University told The Kashmiriyat.

The diaspora community has also staged protests outside Indian embassies in various countries.
