Amid massive protests by tribal community in Jammu Kashmir, Justice GD seeks another extension

Following weeks of protests, the tribal community has briefly paused it’s protests as the Justice GD commision has sought another extension.

The central Government introduced the bills in Lok Sabha on July with an aim to “recognise” new groups as scheduled tribes and scheduled castes, however, it lapsed after the commision sought an extention for further recommendations.

This bill to grant reservation status to Paharis, Gadda Brahmin, Paddaris, Kolis has been met with severe criticism and Gujjar Bakerwal activists have hit roads against the proposed move of the Government.

The government aims to provide reservation to the Pahari community within the reservation meant for Gujjar Bakerwal community, activists say

The commission sent a request  to Jammu Kashmir admin seeking another extension of six months after the current time span that is scheduled to end in September 2023.

The commision called constituted in March 2020 to examine reservation to the Gujjar Bakerwal community has already sought three extension. The last extension was granted to the panel in March 2023.

According to sources, the commission is working further over the issue of Reserved Backward Area (RBA) reservation and new tribes/ classes/ castes may be recommended for reservation

Another bill introduced in the Parliament (Scheduled Castes Order (Amendment)) Bill, 2023, seeks addition of the Valmiki community in the Scheduled Castes category.
