The Congress party on Tuesday called for the resignation or dismissal of Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing him of harboring “hatred” towards the Constitution and its principal architect, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
“Amit Shah does not deserve to hold the position of Home Minister. The individual occupying this chair must safeguard the Constitution,” said AICC General Secretary G.A. Mir at a press conference in Srinagar.
Mir criticized Shah’s recent comments during a debate in the Rajya Sabha, alleging they insulted Ambedkar. “How can someone who shows such disdain for the Constitution and its framers ensure justice?” he asked, demanding that Shah either resign or be sacked by the President. “Shah owes an apology to the nation,” Mir added.
Addressing questions about the BJP’s proposed ‘One Nation, One Election’ bill, Mir suggested it could lead to “strangling democracy” by paving the way for a “one nation, one party” agenda. He emphasized that India’s vast democracy requires diverse representation and urged caution as the bill awaits a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) report.
On the ongoing reservation protest led by NC MP Aga Ruhullah Mehdi, Mir dismissed it as a “photo-op.”
“As a responsible MP, he should have addressed the issue within his party or the government rather than taking to the streets,” Mir stated. He reiterated the Congress’s support for a caste census as a means to resolve reservation concerns.
The press conference was part of the Congress’s larger campaign against Shah, accusing him of undermining the principles of democracy and constitutional values.
