The militant killed in Srinagar’s Natipora encounter on Friday has been identified as a resident of south Kashmir’s Shopian district.

Jammu Kashmir Police has tweeted, “As per the I/Card recovered from the killed militant, he has been #identified as Aqib Bashir Kumar of Trenz and was affiliated with LeT.”

The Jammu Kashmir police had said that an encounter raged when militants opened fire upon force personnel at Natipora, Srinagar. The police retaliated, resulting in the killing of one militant. Reportedly, another militant escaped from the spot.

Aqib’s brother speaking to The Kashmiriyat over the phone confirmed his identity.

Speaking to The Kashmiriyat from Shopian’s Trenz, his brother said that Aqib, son of Bashir Ahmed Kumar, had been missing for nearly a year.

“Aqib (24), went missing on 12 November 2020. The family had filed a missing report at Imam Sahib, Shopian,” Ishfaq Kumar, his brother, said while confirming that the deceased was his brother.

“I saw the picture of his dead body, it is him,” he said.
