The recent border clash between Armenia and Azerbaijan has resulted in the death of at least seven Azerbaijani, two Armenian soldiers, and one Azerbaijani civilian, bringing the total death toll to 14.
The border clash involved exchanges of fire that started from Sunday, killing four Azerbaijani soldiers on Monday and continuing till Tuesday.
The defense ministry of Azerbaijan stated two senior officers, Major General Polad Hashimov and Colonel Ilgar Mirzayev, being killed along with five other servicemen, during the border clash on Tuesday.
Both countries have accused each other of ceasefire violations and shelling.
Armenian officials accuse Azerbaijan of launching drones to attack civilian infrastructure in the Tuvush province town of Berd and of launching cyberattacks on Armenian government websites.
Denouncing these statements Azerbaijani President Ilhan Aliyev said Armenian accusations were “another provocation” and promised to protect Azerbaijan’s territory.
Armenia and Azerbaijan have been locked in a 30-year-old conflict over the Nagorno-Karabakh region since the war of 1994 ended.
The border clash from Sunday onwards marks the most serious spike in hostilities between Armenia and Azerbaijan since 2016.
Turkey has voiced strong support for Azerbaijan in the clash, whereas Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reached out to both Armenia and Azerbaijan counterparts on Monday to urge an immediate ceasefire.
On Tuesday, Russia just like the US stated its worry about the clash and said that it stood ready to play as a mediator.
The United States and Russia, the co-chairs of the Minsk group of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), have condemned the violence, called for restraint and urged the two countries to talk to each other to stop any further escalation of the situation
