The number of patients visiting OPDs in the Valley’s largest District De-addiction Centre in SMHS Hospital, Srinagar, jumped 75% to 41,110 in the year-ending March 2023, Indian Express reported. This means that one patient walked into the OPD every 12 minutes. As per the report, in the previous financial year, over 21,000 follow-up patients and 2,000 new patients had turned up at the DDC while in '22, the number of new users has gone past 3000 and follow-up patients beyond 38000. Nearly 75 percent of the patients at the DDC are users of injected heroin, with many diagnosed with Hepatitis B, C, and in some cases HIV. A militant has been killed while two to three more likely trapped as forces thwarted repeated attempts of militants to escape. On the second day, the Government forces continued the cordon and search operation in the Manzgam area of Kulgam. Earlier, officials said that the three troopers were killed during an encounter that raged in the area on Friday evening. Two more troopers who were injured are being treated at the hospital, they said. Meanwhile, an official said that there has been no contact with the militants after the initial one. A Rohingya couple jailed at the Hiranagar detention center in Jammu was brought handcuffed for the last rites of their child who died in a refugee detention centre near Jammu. A video of the handcuffed parents at the burial site has been widely shared on social media. The 43-day-old baby died at a refugee "holding centre" where clashes broke out between inmates and police earlier this week, NDTV reported. A Mumbai-based social activist has submitted a written complaint to the police against the makers of Hindi film “72 Hoorain”, accusing them of hurting religious sentiments of a community and attempting to divide the country, an official said on Wednesday. According to the official, the complaint was filed at the Goregaon police station in suburban Mumbai. The activist has submitted a separate complaint to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) seeking a ban on the screening of the movie, his lawyer Ali Kashif Khan said. The movie, directed by Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan, is slated to hit theatres on July 7. The Jammu Kashmir Police on Thursday claimed to have arrests two eve teasers for harrassing a girl at Zanana Park Khawajabagh in Baramulla district of north Kashmir. Several chinar trees, which line the iconic Polo View Road in Srinagar, have been lopped by the authorities as part of the Smart City project, leading to an outcry by environmental activists, reported PTI. The authorities defended the move saying it was done following the set procedure. Under the Jammu and Kashmir Specified Trees Act-1969, some tree species such as mulberry, walnut and chinar cannot be felled or lopped in view of their importance in local economy or heritage.
