Centre May Ban Both Factions of Hurriyat Soon

The central government is likely to take major action against the Hurriyat Conference in the coming days.

According to a Times of India report, the government may declare all factions of Hurriyat illegal and ban them under UAPA because of their alleged involvement in financing “terrorism in Jammu Kashmir.”

The Times of India quoting sources said that the Home Ministry will take a final call in the coming days on banning all factions of the Hurriyat Conference under Section 3(1) of the UAPA – including the moderate Hurriyat and Tehreek-e- Hurriyat, which was led by late leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

The report quoted sources as saying that the Jammu Kashmir administration and the NIA had given inputs to the Center to list the Hurriyat as an ‘unlawful organization’, but the home ministry had sought additional inputs and data.

The Home ministry sought clarifications that have been submitted and it is expected that the decision to impose sanctions on Hurriyat factions will be taken soon.

Earlier, the Indian Government declared JKLF, Jamaat e Islami as an unlawful organization, under the provisions of Section 3(1) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.
