Centre must allow new Jammu Kashmir government to function freely: Mehbooba Mufti

Mehbooba Mufti, president of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), congratulated the National Conference (NC) on its victory in the Jammu Kashmir Assembly elections and called on the Centre to respect the outcome.

She urged the government to refrain from interfering in the affairs of the upcoming NC-Congress alliance, stating, “The Centre should take a lesson from the decisive verdict of the Jammu Kashmir Assembly polls and not meddle in the affairs of the government.”

Speaking at a press conference, Mufti praised the people of J&K for voting for stability. “I congratulate the NC leadership for its spectacular win. I also want to congratulate the people of J-K for voting for a stable government and not a hung assembly because the people faced several problems, especially after August 5, 2019. A stable and strong government is very important for the redressal of those problems,” she said.

Mufti noted that a clear mandate was necessary to prevent potential instability, adding, “It seemed that if there was not a clear mandate, then there would be some misadventure.” She warned the Centre that any interference would be “disastrous and worse than what has happened to them now.”

She also attributed the NC-Congress alliance’s win to the public’s desire for a government that could “provide a stable government and fight the BJP and keep it away,” describing this as the main reason for their victory.

Expressing gratitude to her party members, Mufti thanked them for their efforts despite difficult circumstances and urged them not to lose hope.

“We will play the role of a constructive opposition. The issues of the people do not end with an election,” she concluded.
