In an intensified district-wide crackdown against drug trafficking, Anantnag Police has seized more than 48 kilograms of narcotic substances and arrested seven alleged peddlers in less than four days, in what officials described as one of the most significant recent anti-drug operations in south Kashmir.
The largest haul was recovered in village Wantrag under Police Station Mattan, where three coordinated night raids led to the seizure of 30.9 kilograms of charas powder.
Raids were conducted at the residences of Jehangir Ahmad Khan (23.33 kg), Reyaz Ahmad Khan (3.67 kg), and Nowshad Pathan (3.9 kg), all residents of Wantrag. Separate FIRs — 29, 30, and 31 of 2025 — have been registered under section 8/20 of the NDPS Act.
In another major bust, Muzaffer Ahmad Shah, a resident of Hardkichloo Aishmuqam, was apprehended by a naka party at Bashnaar, leading to the recovery of 10.27 kilograms of charas powder. A case (FIR No. 11/2025) has been lodged at Police Station Aishmuqam.
Separately, a team from Police Post Khanabal arrested Khayam Ahmad Bhat of Batangoo at Shohal Batangoo, recovering 7 kilograms of poppy straw. Further investigation in both cases is ongoing.
On April 5, two more arrests were made in Srigufwara and Uttersoo. At Chenar Crossing, Sirhama, Faizan Ahmad Bhat of Marhama was intercepted while riding a two-wheeler (JK11C-0712). A search led to the seizure of 300 grams of charas powder hidden under the motorcycle seat.
In another operation, Gulzar Ahmad Hajam of Padderpora, Chittergul was arrested by a naka team from Police Station Uttersoo after attempting to flee. He was found in possession of 250 grams of charas powder concealed in a polythene bag.
Senior police officials praised the swift and coordinated action across multiple units.
One officer said the recoveries demonstrate the police’s uncompromising stand against the drug menace and urged citizens to come forward with credible information, assuring that the identity of informants will be kept confidential.
Police said investigations are ongoing and further arrests are likely in the coming days.
