Dalit Scholar Commits Suicide After Alleged Harassment by Upper Caste Students

On 1st October, a 29-year-old junior doctor Bhagwat Devangan allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in his hostel room at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College and Hospital the police said.

It’s been 10 days now since Devangan committed suicide. He was allegedly tortured mentally and physically by his seniors for belonging to a quota student. Nonetheless, he belonged to the OBC(Other Backward Class) category, but he got admission under the “general category”, without reservations.

Devangan was pursuing a postgraduate course in orthopaedics, said Garha police station’s inspector Rakesh Tiwari.

According to inspector Tiwari, when Devangan’s family called him he was not responding to their calls, so they called one of his friends. When his friend went to check him out he found the door of his hostel room bolted from inside, so he rushed to call the police. The door was broken and the doctor was found hanging from the ceiling fan by a rope.

However, no suicide note was found in the room.  So far no one has been arrested, the police have only conducted a preliminary inquiry and no FIR has been registered yet.

The police said Devangan hailed from Chapa near Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh. He had returned to Jabalpur only last Sunday after a month’s leave.
