The death of a local woman in the Takibal Reban area of Zainapora has sparked tension, with her family alleging that she was murdered by her in-laws.

The deceased has been identified as Urfi Jan, 27, wife of Shawket Ahmad Lone, a resident of the same area. While initial reports suggested she died of a heart attack, her parents and relatives have strongly disputed this, claiming foul play and demanding a thorough investigation.

“She was brought dead and rather dumped off by her in-laws at the hospital. I reached her at 2:30 in the night, there was nobody with the body,” her brother, told The Kashmiriyat.

A hospital official from Yaripora, Kulgam, told The Kashmiriyat, “She was brought dead. Her husband was with her, who was unconscious, and her brother and sister-in-law were accompanying the body. It’s recorded on CCTV. I initially thought it was a case of road accident. We tried CPR for about 40 minutes, we tried other medical procedures and then performed ECD; however, she showed no signs of life, after which she was declared brought dead. In the meantime, her husband had to be referred to DH Kulgam as he too was unconscious.”

Following her death, Urfi Jan’s body was taken to District Hospital Shopian for medico-legal formalities, including a post-mortem, to determine the exact cause of death.

A police official confirming the death said that the matter has been taken cognizance of and legal proceedings have been initiated.

“The cause of death can only be confirmed after the post-mortem report is received. A further investigation is underway,” the official said.

He added, “If the case is found suspicious and someone is involved, we will not leave them and will act according to law. We have detailed the husband, brother in law and father In law of the deceased woman for questioning.”

The incident has caused widespread concern in the area, with locals urging authorities to ensure a fair investigation and justice for the family.
