Earthquake of 6.7 Magnitude Hits Assam

An earthquake of magnitude 6.7 hit Assam this morning at 7:41 am. As per the National Center for Seismology, the depth of the earthquake was 10 km from the surface. The earthquake hits Assam amidst the deadly Covid-19 pandemic, when Assam has 10,571 active Covid cases, as per the Assam Covid-19 Dashboard.

It has emerged that the epicenter of the earthquake was near Dhekiajuli town, which is located 140 km north of the capital Guwahati.

There have been no reports of anyone being injured. Only the photographs showing damaged walls and windows have surfaced as of now. The health minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted a few pictures of the damage.

The tremors were also felt in the neighboring areas of the Northeast and Bengal.

Meanwhile, the PM has assured help to Assam via Twitter. “Spoke to Assam CM Shri @sarbanandsonwal Ji regarding the earthquake in parts of the state. Assured all possible help from the Centre. I pray for the well-being of the people of Assam,” he tweeted.
