Elections in Jammu Kashmir? Government Likely to Initiate Dialogue with Political Parties- Report

The BJP led Central Government is likely to start talks with the political parties of Jammu Kashmir, NDTV reported.

The talks are being held to restore statehood and to hold elections in the region.

The People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration- an amalgam of various political groups operating in the region for the restoration of special status of Jammu Kashmir has not received any formal invitation from the Modi-led Government as of now, but they have expressed willingness to join talks with the centre.

The National Conference has said that it may participate in the delimitation process, but the People’s Democratic Party has outrightly denied to participate in the process saying, “we do not have any MLAs or MPs to participate in the delimitation process.”

In June 2018, Jammu Kashmir was placed under President’s rule after the BJP broke its alliance with Mehbooba Mufti. Since then, There has been no political process. In August 2019, the central government abrogated the special status of Jammu Kashmir and bifurcated it into two union territories.

Earlier in 2019, there were reports of elections being held in the region however, the Election Commission rejected the proposal, citing an administrative report, that there was a security risk in holding the elections.

Meanwhile, the local population has been anticipating that something major is likely to happen again in Jammu Kashmir, the rumours fuelled further after 200 companies of the paramilitary were moving in Jammu Kashmir.

Quoting Sources, NDTV, reported that the government may initiate the process of dialogue with political parties and discuss elections in the state.
