Encounter Rages in Forests Between Kulgam and Shopian in Kashmir

An encounter has started between militants and Government forces in the Kongwatan area of Damhal Hanjipora that lies between the districts of Shopian and Kulgam in South Kashmir on Saturday morning.

An official confirming the exchange of gunfire to The Kashmiriyat said that 34 Rashtriya Rifles of the Indian Army, Jammu Kashmir Police, and 18 BN of CRPF jointly laid a siege in the Kongwatan forest range area.

He said that the cordon was laid after the forces had received a tip-off about Militant movements in the area.

As soon as the forces launched the searches, the Militants opened fire on them to which the forces responded.

All the entry and exit points to the area have been sealed, sources said, adding “two to three militants are believed to be holed up at the site of the encounter.”

The locals meanwhile said that an intermittent exchange of gunfire is going on.
