Jammu Kashmir today mourns the passing of one of its most revered spiritual leaders, Ayatullah Al‑Uzma Syed ul Ulama Aga Syed Mohammad Baqir Al‑Moosavi Al‑Najfi (RA), who left for his heavenly abode on April 18, family members told The Kashmiriyat.

He was one of the most revered Shia scholars of Jammu Kashmir, known for his deep spiritual insight, command over religious sciences, and unwavering commitment to community guidance.

Born in 1940 into the illustrious Aga family of Budgam, his early education at Babul Ilm laid the foundation for a life dedicated to Islamic scholarship.

He later pursued advanced studies at the prestigious Howza Ilmia in Najaf Ashraf, Iraq—one of the world’s foremost Shia seminaries—where he was shaped by the teachings of leading scholars of the time.

Returning to Kashmir in 1982, Allama Baqir emerged as a moral and intellectual force.

Fluent in Arabic, Persian, and Kashmiri, he enriched the region’s religious discourse through his sermons, poetry, and writings.

He served as a bridge between Najaf’s scholarly traditions and the evolving needs of the Kashmiri community, mentoring generations of students and thinkers.

As a recipient of the Shaheed Murtaza Mutahhari Award, his contributions to Islamic thought were recognized far beyond local boundaries. His passing has left an immense void in the spiritual and intellectual fabric of Kashmir.

A direct descendant of a noble lineage of scholars, Ayatullah Baqir Sahib carried forward his family’s luminous legacy with grace and quiet strength.

Known across sects for his humility and unwavering adherence to principles, he was not just a cleric but a moral institution unto himself.

From his deeply reflective sermons to his discreet yet impactful social presence, his life was devoted to nurturing wisdom, faith, and harmony.

Generations of students, scholars, and ordinary people looked up to him as a guide who walked gently but firmly on the path of righteousness.

In a moving tribute, social activist Hakim Suhail Abbas Kashmiri recalled, “My meetings with Allama Sahib were like voyages into an ocean of pure knowledge. From the first greeting to the final salaam, one heard only pearls of wisdom—never a word of worldly distraction. I felt blessed to sit in his presence.”

His loss is deeply felt not just by the Shia community but by all those in the Valley who valued spiritual integrity and intellectual depth. Tributes continue to pour in from scholars, devotees, and community leaders around the world.

As prayers are held across Kashmir and beyond, the people stand in collective remembrance of a scholar whose voice, though now silent, will echo through the corridors of time.
