Engineering student turned militant among three militants killed in Shopian encounter

Three militants have been killed in the encounter that raged on Tuesday afternoon in the Shopian district of south Kashmir.

Officials told The Kashmiriyat that on Tuesday afternoon Forces including RR of the Indian Army, Jammu Kashmir Police and CRPF had launched a cordon and search operation in the Nagbal area of Shopian, during which militants opened fire upon forces to which the forces retaliated.

The Kashmir Police Zone while quoting ADGP Vijay Kumar wrote, “The 3 killed militants have been identified as local militants of LeT namely Danish Khursheed Bhat, Tanveer Wani & Tawseef Bhat. They were involved in several militant crime cases. Militant Danish was involved in the recruitment of youth into militant ranks in Shopian.”

One of the slain Tawseef Ahmed Bhat, a 23-year-old had been missing from his home since May in Shopian’s Zainapora. Speaking to The Kashmiriyat his family members had appealed to him to return home. An engineering student, Tawseef left and did not return home.

As per police records, all the killed militants were categorized terrorists and involved in several terror crime cases including attacks on Police/security forces and civilian atrocities. It is pertinent to mention that the killed terrorist Danish Khursheed Bhat and Tanveer Ahmad Wani who were active since Aug-2021, were trying to revive the terror folds by recruiting & motivating the gullible youth to join terror folds. Moreover, the killed terrorist Danish Khursheed had earlier escaped from several encounters.

Incriminating materials, arms & ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation.

In this regard, a case under relevant sections of law has been registered and investigation has been initiated. People are requested to cooperate with Police till the area at encounter site is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials, if any.
