FIR lodged against Muslim MP in Uttar Pradesh for alleged power theft, threatening officials

Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Zia-ur-Rehman Barq faces legal trouble as an FIR has been registered against him at Nakhasa police station for allegedly threatening officials from the Uttar Pradesh Power Department during an inspection.

The complaint, lodged by Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Santosh Tripathi, cites Sections 352, 351(2), and 132 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Earlier, the police booked Barq for alleged electricity theft at his residence in the Deepa Sarai neighborhood. The incident reportedly occurred during a routine inspection at around 7:30 a.m. when a power department team visited the MP’s house.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Krishna Kumar stated that during the inspection, Barq confronted the officials, using abusive language and threatening them. According to the complaint, Barq warned, “If the government changes, we will destroy you,” along with other inappropriate remarks.

Despite the altercation, the inspection team completed its task and filed a formal complaint with the police.

The Power Department team, under heavy security, conducted a raid at Barq’s residence on suspicions of tampering with the electricity meter.

While no official conclusions have been drawn, SDO Santosh Tripathi refrained from commenting further until the investigation is complete.

Advocate Kasim Jamal, representing the MP, denied the allegations, stating that the household operates on minimal electricity usage with appliances such as air conditioners, ceiling fans, lights, and a refrigerator. He added that the residence is equipped with solar panels and clarified that the family consists of only four members.

The incident has drawn attention to the alleged misuse of power and official resources. Authorities continue their investigation into the matter.
