‘Government is Rigid to not Repeal the Laws’- Farmers Protest to Continue

On Friday, Union agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar has told the farm unions that the government would not repeal three contentious agricultural laws.

The Centre asked the farmers to reconsider its proposal for putting the Acts on hold for 12-18 months adding that it was the best offer Government could provide to them.

Tomar said the dialogue process could only restart if the farmers reconsider the government’s proposal, and asked the farm unions to inform the latter by January 23 if they were ready to change their minds.

While farmers’ unions have called for the repeal of the laws. On Friday, they vowed to intensify their agitation, The farmers union said that they are going to take a rally on tractors in Delhi on January 26.

However, they said they will do it after India’s Republic Day celebrations and are not going to disrupt the official function.

The agriculture minister blamed unnamed “forces” for the failure of the talks and criticized “people with vested interests who wanted the talks to be unsuccessful”.

The farmers rejected both proposals instead of agreeing to meet the government midway. They said they would not budge from their demand for a complete repeal of the laws.

No further dates were given for any discussion.
