Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday announced that the Jammu Kashmir government will provide five marlas of land to every family that lost their homes and property in the recent landslides and flash floods. The move, he said, is aimed at enabling affected households to rebuild their dwellings.
The announcement was made during his visit to Duggain, Billawar, where many residents were severely hit by the floods. Earlier, Abdullah conducted an aerial survey of flood-affected areas in the district, accompanied by Bani MLA Dr. Rameshwar Singh.
Calling 2025 a year of “immense devastation” for the Union Territory, the Chief Minister directed the administration to speed up relief and rehabilitation work. Torrential rains have already damaged over 350 bridges, nearly 2,000 km of roads, thousands of hectares of agricultural land, standing crops, and several government as well as private buildings.
Abdullah also undertook ground visits in Kathua and aerial surveys of Hiranagar and Lakhanpur before holding a review meeting with Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Sharma and other district officials. He instructed them to conduct extensive tours of flood-hit areas and submit detailed reports for immediate action.
MLA Dr. Rameshwar Singh highlighted the plight of villages such as Moar, Najote, and Kanthal-Majra, where almost 100 families have lost their land and homes. He also drew attention to damages to Jalana Bridge, delays in school infrastructure projects, and appealed for relief measures, including amnesty on KCC loans and electricity bills.
The Chief Minister assured that the government would seriously examine these demands and extend all possible support to ensure rehabilitation of the affected families
