Health Department issues guidelines to combat Gastroenteritis : here is everything you need to know

In response to a recent outbreak of gastroenteritis in certain areas of the Kashmir division, the Health Department of Jammu and Kashmir has issued an urgent directive to all Chief Medical Officers, Medical Superintendents, and Block Medical Officers.

The directive emphasizes the need for extensive public awareness campaigns to prevent further spread of the disease.

The Health Department has outlined several key Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that must be communicated to the public. These include the use of boiled water for drinking and cooking, maintaining proper hand hygiene practices using soap and disinfectants, and avoiding close contact with affected individuals.

Special attention is to be given to vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with comorbidities, ensuring they are kept away from those affected and monitored closely for early detection of symptoms.

Additionally, the directive advises against the consumption of raw vegetables, salads, street foods, and junk foods. Fruits should be thoroughly washed before consumption. The public is also encouraged to stay hydrated and avoid direct sunlight during peak hours of the day.

To disseminate this crucial information, the Health Department has instructed the use of multiple communication channels. These include making announcements in public areas, door-to-door campaigns, distribution of posters and pamphlets, and sharing updates via social media platforms. The aim is to ensure widespread awareness and adherence to the SOPs to mitigate the outbreak effectively.

The Health Department has called for regular updates on the situation and the public dissemination of accurate information to prevent misinformation.
