“Hussainiyat will win in every era” – Pellets rained on Shia Muslim Mourners in Kashmir

Strict restrictions amid virus and government forces manning the streets and pellets raining on Kashmiri Muslims marked the 9th day of Muharram – the first month of the Islamic Lunar Calendar.

On a routine march which was taken out from Khomeini Chowk – Bemina in Srinagar, the police fired tear smoke shells and pellets on the mourners who were a part of the procession that is commemorated every year to mourn the killing of Imam Hussain (AS) who is the grandson of Prophet Muhammed – the last prophet of Islamic faith.

In the police action several protests were injured to which the police responded by saying that the processions were banned by Supreme Court in view of the global pandemic.

The locals told The Kashmiriyat that the police used indiscriminate force against the peaceful mourners. “We were following the regular Covid – 19 SOP’s despite of that the police spared nobody and fired pellets on the women and children who were a part of the procession. We do not understand why peaceful processions are a problem when Hindu Yatras are openly being allowed.” said Irshad Ahmed, a local resident. A 10 year old boy was also allegedly injured after being hit with a tear smoke shell.

In other areas of Srinagar, including Dal gate, Batmaloo and Lal Chowk several marches were not allowed. While the mourners said “Hussainiyat will live forever and Yazeed will loose every time” in response to the restrictions imposed upon the marches in Srinagar, Kashmir.
