Gurmeet Singh, one of the seven persons killed in an attack in Jammu Kashmir’s Ganderbal, was speaking to his wife on the phone when he was struck by a bullet, his father shared on Monday.
A doctor from Kashmir and six non-local laborers lost their lives, while five others sustained injuries in the attack at an under-construction tunnel in Gund on Sunday.
Gurmeet Singh, 45, hailed from the village of Sakhowal in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district and worked as a construction worker for a company there.
“He was speaking to his wife over a mobile phone when this incident took place… He told his wife that he had been hit by a bullet,” said Gurmeet’s father, Dharam Singh.
The family was later informed that he had succumbed to his injuries, Dharam Singh explained from Gurdaspur.
Gurmeet had been living in Kashmir for the past five years and had been associated with the construction company for several years, according to his father.
A relative described Gurmeet as the family’s sole breadwinner and urged the state government to provide them with all possible support. He added that Gurmeet is survived by his wife, two daughters, a son, and his parents.
Family members of Gurmeet were inconsolable after learning of his demise.
On Sunday, unidentified terrorists attacked laborers and staff working on the tunnel project at Gund in Ganderbal as they returned to their camp late in the evening.
Officials reported that the militants, believed to be at least two, opened indiscriminate fire on the group of laborers, which included both locals and non-locals.
Two laborers died on the spot, and four others, along with the doctor, succumbed to their injuries later, according to officials. PTI
