Former U.S. President Donald J. Trump announced today that India and Pakistan have agreed to a “full and immediate ceasefire” following a night of talks mediated by the United States.
Taking to his social media platform, Trump wrote, “After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
Adding further details, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that he and Vice President Vance had engaged with senior Indian and Pakistani officials over the past 48 hours.
In a statement posted on social media, Rubio said they had been in direct contact with key leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik.
“I am pleased to announce the Governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site,” Rubio stated. He commended both leaders “on their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace.”
However, there was no immediate confirmation from officials in New Delhi or Islamabad regarding the ceasefire.
The announcement comes amid heightened tensions between the two South Asian neighbors.
The ceasefire announcement has sparked reactions across the globe, with some welcoming the development as a positive step toward peace, while others questioned the durability of the agreement without formal bilateral talks.
This is a developing story.
