India Records a Little Less than 4 Lakh Cases, Counting Begins for West Bengal Election

On Sunday, India recorded 3,689 deaths due to Covid-19, the highest number of deaths in a day since the pandemic broke out. On Saturday, the new positive cases were recorded to be more than four lakhs. Although, on Sunday, the recorded cases were a little below the four lakh mark with 3.92 fresh cases in the last 24 hours.

Counting for votes in 4 states (West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Assam) and a union territory (Puducherry) have begun today amidst the chaos created by the pandemic under strict Covid protocol.

The voting for these elections took place in March and April, the time around which Covid-19 cases started growing at an alarming rate. From fewer than 25,000 cases until March 14, the number of Covid cases crossed 4 Lakh mark on May 1.

In three states Bhartiya Janta Party is trailing by huge numbers, the Trinamool Congress is placed at 196 well above BJP with 79, while its also trailing in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

All of the major political leaders help large rallies in these constituencies, including the Prime Minister, which often led to defying the Covid protocol, which generated a vast amount of criticism from around the world. The Election Commission has banned all victory processions in the view of the pandemic.
