India’s Foreign Secretary and family targeted by right-wing trolls after ceasefire announcement

In the aftermath of the recent India-Pakistan conflict, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has come under intense online attack, with trolls spreading abusive content aimed at him and his family.

The harassment escalated after Misri’s role in announcing a ceasefire between the two nations on May 10, 2025, following a bilateral understanding. Despite Misri’s composed leadership during the tense situation, his X account was flooded with vile comments, leading him to lock his profile for protection.

The attacks on Misri are not isolated; they echo a disturbing pattern of online abuse. Just last week, Modi supporters launched a vicious campaign against Himanshi Narwal, the widow of a soldier, solely for her call for “no hate, no violence.”

Now, the Foreign Secretary and his family have become targets, with some even sharing personal details of his daughter.

One particular user, “DanielV1784407,” posted: “Vikram Misri ho ya Modi ho, ceasefire ka plan jiska bhi tha wo m* hai h* ka bccha hai… inko gaali dene ka adhikaar hai hume.” This kind of language reflects the unrelenting online vitriol faced by Misri and his family.

Another X (Twitter) user wrote, tweeting a video of Misri announcing the ceasefire, “This is where every Indian lost faith in them. This is where we bent the knee in front of the enemy even after having an upper hand. This is the moment that broke the morale of even our armed forces. This is the moment we failed as a Nation.”

“Traitor, Gaddar, Deshdrohi! You made you offsprings settle outside of india before prostrating and offering your head to pakistan. Shameful, absolutely shameful, wrote Sanjukta @Rimoru121145, another X user.

As Misri locks his account to protect his privacy, AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi and former Indian Ambassador Navdeep Suri have publicly condemned the abuse. Owaisi called Misri a “decent and honest” diplomat who has worked tirelessly for the nation. Suri, expressing disgust at the targeting of Misri, praised his professionalism and dedication.

The controversy comes amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, following the ceasefire announcement by Misri. Despite a commitment to end hostilities, reports surfaced of ceasefire violations by Pakistan, with Misri addressing these concerns in a late-night briefing.

Vikram Misri, who assumed office as India’s Foreign Secretary in July 2024, has had a distinguished career in the Indian Foreign Service.

A Kashmiri by birth, Misri has served in several critical diplomatic posts, including as Deputy High Commissioner in Sri Lanka and Consul General in Munich. His leadership during the recent crisis highlighted his professionalism, yet the online abuse he faces shows the growing impact of the IT Cell’s unchecked influence.

As the political environment continues to be shaped by online discourse, critics argue that Modi’s IT Cell is spiraling out of control, targeting anyone who dares to disagree or challenge the government’s narrative.

With Misri now at the receiving end of such attacks, many are questioning the long-term consequences of the toxic culture fostered by these online mobs.
