Iran Sends Black Box of Downed Ukrainian Plane to France

Iran’s deputy foreign minister said the black box from the Ukrainian passenger plane, which was accidentally downed in Tehran earlier this year, has been sent to France.

The Ukrainian passenger plane was hit by two missiles resulting in all 176 people on board being killed on January 8.

The black box was sent over to Paris on Friday and would be analyzed by French experts on Monday.

Iran had delayed releasing the black box while facing disagreements with countries, whose citizens had died in the plane crash, about where the black box should be decoded.

Global aviation rules permit Iran to lead the investigation but experts claim that only a few countries are capable of reading black boxes and manufacturers are typically involved.

Iran refused to send the black box to the US, where the plane’s manufacturer Boeing is based.

Iran had initially denied responsibility for the plane crash amid heightened tensions with the US, due to the killing of top Iranian general Qasem Soleimani by a US drone strike.

After Western intelligence officials claimed evidence pointed to Iranian involvement, Iran admitted fault.

Last week Iran released a self-conducted investigation report of the crash via the Civil Aviation Organisation of Iran (CAOI) blaming “human error” and poor military communication for the missile attack on the passenger plane.

President Hassan Rouhani described the incident as an “unforgivable mistake”.

The missiles attack on the Ukrainian passenger plane came after Iran fired ballistic missiles at two US bases in Iraq as an act of retaliation for Soleimani’s killing.
